OUR STORY

Early Years

Cockrell Funeral Home was established in 1936 by Jim and Floydia Cockrell. They initially operated out of an old building near the county courthouse. Later, in the early 1940's, they purchased the current building at 310 North Jefferson Street. The Cockrell's both lived and worked at this location for the next thirty years.

In the early 1970's, Don and Betty Healy of Morton, MS purchased the business from Mr. & Mrs. Cockrell.

They owned and operated the funeral home under the Cockrell name until 1990, when they sold to Bob & Pam Persons, both of whom are licensed funeral directors and insurance agents. They continue the Cockrell Funeral Home tradition of caring excellence in service today. Bob had apprenticed and worked under Mr. Healy's tutelage for nearly ten years before purchasing the funeral home.

Cockrell Funeral Home continues to offer all styles of funerals, traditional and non-traditional, as well as cremation and custom services. We offer all types of caskets, from factory-produced metal to hand-made reclaimed wooden caskets and a wide selection outer burial containers for use at the cemetery for interment. We also offer pre-need and pre-arrangement plans to fit all needs and budgets.

We are also a representative for Columbus Marble Works, a regional monument company that has been in business since 1842. We've been associated with them for nearly 70 years and have ordered thousands of monuments. Please contact us for more information about funeral services, caskets and other merchandise, and enduring stone or bronze monuments.

Transitions

In the mid-1970's, Mr. Jim sold the business to Don and Betty Healy, who moved to Macon from Morton, MS to operate the funeral home. They continued to serve the public in the manner established by Mr. Cockrell until 1989, when they, in turn, sold the buisness to Bobby and Pam Persons, both of whom grew up locally.

Into the Future

Bobby and Pam have continued the tradition of excellence in service to their client families, while also modernizing the entire business. Their goal is to attempt to give each family a personalized service that will help to comfort them both at the time of the service as well as in the years to come.
