Laura Persons Thomas

Laura Persons Thomas, 72, passed away on June 7, 2022, at Anderson Hospital in Meridian, MS after a long illness. A graveside service will be held at the Lynville Methodist Cemetery in Kemper County on Monday, June 13, 2022, at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be held at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon, MS from 9:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M. on Monday morning. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are requested to be made to the Lauderdale County, MS, Animal Shelter, 6100 Rocky Lane, Marion, MS 39342. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is honored to be is charge of the arrangements.

Laura Persons Thomas was born in Macon, MS on October 19, 1949, to the late Eugene and Annie Ruth Sanford Persons. She grew up in Wahalak, MS and was a graduate of Dekalb High School in Dekalb, MS. After graduation she moved to Columbus, MS where she worked at Kmart for several years and then moved back home to take care of her mother in her later years. In 1992, Laura was elected to the Kemper Co. Election Commission where she served for sixteen years. In 1998 she began attending East Mississippi Community College in Scooba and graduated with a degree in accounting and a GPA of 3.94. In 2009, she began working as a receptionist at the Western Motel and continued there until the onset of COVID. Laura was talented in many ways, including being a pianist for the Wahalak Baptist Church, where she was a member, for many years as well as being a furniture maker. She made much of the furniture for the Back Porch restaurant in Wahalak by hand. She also enjoyed working in her large yard. Laura was a homemaker and caregiver and loved each minute of making a home for her son, Travis.

Laura is survived by her son: Travis Gregory and was preceded in death by her parents.
