Clemmie Henry Magruder died Sunday, August 28, 2022, at Windsor Place
in Columbus, Mississippi. She was born on July 7, 1933, in Starkville,
Mississippi, to Augustin Freeland Magruder and Helena Ingram Magruder.
Clemmie graduated from Starkville High School and attended Mississippi State
University. She received her RN degree from Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa,
Alabama and her BS in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Clemmie worked for a number of years as a public health nurse in Kenosha,
Wisconsin. Even though she was never comfortable driving, she did learn to slip
and slide on the snowy and icy roads of Wisconsin without any serious damage to
life or limb. Clemmie was Assistant Director of Student Nursing at Providence
Hospital in Mobile, Alabama. She also worked the night shift at South Baldwin
Hospital in Foley, Alabama and Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama. Working
the night shift suited Clemmie because she was forever getting her nights and days
mixed up. To say Clemmie was a night owl is an understatement.
In 2001, Joe Peters invited Clemmie to go to their 50 th class reunion at
Starkville High School. Although Clemmie refused to go with him to the reunion,
she did agree to go on a date with him. Over the next several years, together they
completed Clemmie’s bucket list. Clemmie and Joe were married on January 14,
2006, in the chapel of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Foley. Sadly, Joe died in
2007.
Clemmie is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her older
sister, Helena Magruder Haynes. She is survived by her sisters, Betsy Magruder
Osborne (Stanley) and Ann Magruder Tindal. She is also survived by one nephew,
Gus Osborne, and three nieces, Alyce Osborne Watts (Tim), Catherine Tindal
Penick (Ray), Elizabeth Tindal Woods (Bill), and several great (and great-great)
nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 3, 2022, at
Odd Fellows Cemetery in Starkville. Memorials may be made to
St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or to St. Paul’s
Episcopal Church, 506 N. Pine St., Foley, Alabama 36535. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is honored
to be entrusted with arrangements
