Yvonne Strong was born on December 11,1945 in Meridian, MS to the Roy Alvin and Bess Edith Hill Strong. She grew up in Shuqualak and graduated from Noxubee County High School in 1963. She graduated from East Mississippi Junior College and also from Mississippi State College for Women, earning a degree in Elementary Education in 1967. She was a friendly person who made many friends throughout her life. She, along with several of her friends and classmates, made several trips after their college graduation and in the following years. Among other places, they went to the 1967 World’s Fair in Montreal, Canada, stopping in Washington DC and in New York City for a couple of days each. Their return trip carried them through new states and included a stopover in Nashville, TN. The next year they made a trip to the western US and another year brought a trip up the east coast. Yvonne enjoyed the trips very much and loved to talk with the fellow travelers of the trips and the memories made. Her friends describe her as “beautiful and talented and such a good friend to all she met”.

Yvonne first taught school at Shuqualak Attendance Center and later taught for many years at Central Academy in Macon, MS, touching countless children’s lives along the way.  She was a caring and devoted teacher who nurtured the young minds in her care, challenging them to not put limitations on themselves and to do their very best in whatever they attempted. She was always available to talk to any child about their troubles. After her retirement, Yvonne took wonderful care of her aging parents until their deaths. She enjoyed taking care of her many beloved pets, collecting rocks and fossils, and visiting with her neighbors.

Yvonne leaves behind her brother: Al Strong of Pearl, MS.
