Richard W Adams

September 16, 1934 — April 30, 2020

Richard Adams, 85, longtime Police Chief of the city of Macon, passed away suddenly at his residence on April 30, 2020. A private graveside service was  held  at Shuqualak Cemetery Sunday, May 3, 2020 with Rev. Steve Galloway officiating. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 510, Macon, MS  39341. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Richard was born on September 16, 1934 in Scooba, MS to the late John Luten and Sara Ann Smith Adams. He attended Kemper County schools and later graduated from East Mississippi Junior College. Richard joined the United States Army and served his term of service in the continental United States. He married his darling, BeBe Watkins, in 1960 and was a devoted husband who cared for her every need, especially later in life when she became unable to care for herself. He was a  long-time member of First Baptist Church in Macon. Richard served as the Chief of the Macon Police Department for over twenty-seven years and was very instrumental in keeping the Mayor and Board of Aldermen up to date as far as pay and compensation for his officers. He also did all he could to ensure that his men had the best vehicles, equipment, and training available. No matter what situation occurred or what time it happened, he was always there to back them up in any way he could.  Richard was a very people-oriented person and he loved to visit with family and friends whenever he could. He enjoyed cooking and used it as his outreach ministry to his community by hosting people or by taking food to them. He owned and operated the very popular Country Kitchen restaurant for several years. Richard liked to keep busy so after he sold his restaurant he became the bank courier for Bankfirst in Macon for over 15 years. He also enjoyed gardening and growing tomatoes.
