Peggy Hoffman Heard

Mrs. Peggy Hoffman Heard, 91, of Brooksville, MS passed away peacefully at home in Brooksville MS on Saturday, September 18, 2021. She was born in Choctaw County, MS on June 8,1930 to the late James Kenneth Hoffman and Lucille McMinn Hoffman. A graveside service at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 21 at Brooksville Cemetery will be held to honor Peggy’s life. Bro. Jay Spiller and Bro. Danny Avery will officiate the service. The family requests that memorials be sent to Brooksville Baptist Church, % Judy Bolin P.O. Box 52, Brooksville, MS 39739 or to the Brooksville Cemetery Fund, % 586 Hines Road Brooksville, MS 39739. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be in charge of the service arrangements.

Peggy was born in Choctaw County, MS on June 8,1930 to the late James Kenneth Hoffman and Lucille McMinn Hoffman. She moved to the Crawford at age ten, she graduated from French Camp Academy and soon married her lifelong soulmate, Johnny Heard. To this union was born four children: Linda, Buzzy, Dana, and Scott.

Peggy worked at the telephone company in Brooksville, MS for several years and later worked for thirteen years at the Bell Telephone office in Macon, MS. Later she served as a clerk at the Brooksville City Clerk’s office and then as a clerk at both a pharmacy and a retail business. Along with her other work, Peggy helped her husband with the myriad of chores that are necessary for a successful farm. She enjoyed the farm life and was actively involved with the farm until her death. She was known to be very talented with her hands in knitting. Peggy was known for her famous pound cake and she enjoyed giving away the fruits of her labor. Peggy was a longstanding and very active member of Brooksville Baptist Church and served in several offices there through the years. She loved working  crossword puzzles and reading, especially reading her Bible, which she read completely through almost a dozen times. Those dearest to her heart were God, her family and her church. Peggy was known as “Gran” to her family and friends. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Heard, and by a son-in-law Don Garner.

Surviving Peggy are her daughters: Linda Garner of Brooksville, MS and Dana Quin (Mike) of Columbia, SC and her two sons: John Henry “Buzzy” Heard (Deborah) and Scott Heard, both of Brooksville. Also left behind to mourn is one brother: Kenneth Hoffman of Brooksville; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.
