Nellie Burton Thomas

Mrs. Nellie Burton Thomas, 86, of Shuqualak, MS, passed away Monday, September 9, 2024, at Noxubee County Nursing Home in Macon, MS.  A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Macedonia Community Church in Shuqualak, MS.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.

The family requests no flowers, please. Memorials may be made to Macedonia Community Church, 3247 Honey Lake Rd, Shuqualak MS  39361. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the service arrangements.

Nellie Burton was born in Macon, MS on June 25,1938 to the late Clinton Burton and Doris Beasley Burton. She attended Shuqualak High School and married Earl Thomas, who made his career in the United States Air Force. Nellie followed her husband through Air Force bases all across the United States, including in Tennessee, North Carolina, Orlando and Ft. Walton Beach Florida, and Hawaii. After their military time ended, they made their home in the Macedonia community on the Thomas family homeplace where they enjoyed the peaceful country lifestyle. Nellie enjoyed working puzzles, reading, and watching the animals. She took care of many aged or sick people in their homes through the years and became a friend to everyone she met.   Nellie is preceded by her parents and her spouse Earl Thomas.

Nellie is survived by her daughter, Jackie Thomas Thompson, Graham, N,C.; brother: Charles Jerry Burton, Palm Desert, CA and his daughters, Susie, Leslie, and Becky; Sister-in-Law: Maxine Weaver and son Tommy, Columbus, GA; grandchildren and great grandchildren: Robert Thompson ( Jami) and their son Wyatt; Michelle Zarate( Jose) and daughter, Sofia; Christopher Pope ( Natalie) and their children Ireland, Odin, Vianne and Nolan; Andrew Pope (Leidy); niece and nephews: Karen Burke, David Bauer, Larry Thomas and Jack Thomas as well as by her beloved friends: Ann White family and Eddie Pearl Foxx.
