Levin "Bubba" Hailey

August 19, 1938 — July 11, 2020

Levin “Bubba” Hailey went to Heaven on July 11, 2020. A private family graveside was held Monday, July 13, 2020 at Shuqualak Cemetery with Bro. Bill Ross officiating. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 105 Dent St., Macon, MS  39341.  Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Bubba was born in Kemper County, Mississippi on August 19, 1938, to O.L. and Mary Alice Sciple Hailey. He married Margaret West Watkins in 1964 and they enjoyed life together until she passed away in 2009. Bubba was a passionate believer in his God and the peace that he found in his faith was evident in everything that he did. He loved Jesus Christ, to hunt and fish, nature and the outdoors, the sight of deer or turkeys feeding beside his house, a hummingbird by his window, a squirrel by the swing, and dogs. He loved people and for several decades he ran The Gholson Cash Store where you could find anything that you needed along with a ready smile and good conversation. He retired from the Mississippi Highway Department as a supervisor for Kemper County. Bubba had a gift for making friends of everyone who met him. No one walked away without remembering his name.

Bubba knew how to fix almost anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand or offer advice or just listen. He was incredibly loyal and could always be counted on when things were tough whether it was a loved one with a terrible disease or a tornado in a neighboring town. He was an amateur taxidermist which caused his grandchildren to always immediately look in his freezer in the old store to see what new animal, bird, or reptile was going to be his next specimen. Bubba was not a prideful man, but he was exceptionally proud of his family, his children, grandchildren and especially his great grandchildren. Bubba was a man of deep faith and it was through that faith that he fought the battles of illness over the past three years with calm unyielding faith and courage. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Macon.

He is survived by his children W. G. Watkins (Polly) of Madison and Billy Watkins (Susan) of Ridgeland, his brothers Levi Hailey and David Hailey and sister Vondelle Hailey Fairbanks and his loving companion Faye Coleman of Macon. Bubba has six grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Your family will miss you Bubba. Go rest high on that mountain.
