Larry Gene Giesbrecht

February 16, 1949 — August 14, 2021

Larry Gene Giesbrecht was born on February 16, 1949, at Montezuma, Kansas, to Tobias and Elda Jantz Giesbrecht. In the early morning hours of Aug 14, 2021, he quietly went to his eternal reward with his wife, son, and a son-in-law by his side.

His early childhood years were spent on the home farm east of Montezuma, KS. He completed his eight years of basic education at Montezuma Public school. At twelve years of age, he accepted God’s call and began a life of service to the Lord. On December 14, 1961, Minister Ervey Unruh baptized him into the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite.  In his mid-teens he moved to the new congregation being established at Macon, Mississippi. He didn’t mind hard work and enjoyed living life on the farm.

On September 22, 1968, he married his life’s companion, Glennis Unruh, at Montezuma, Kansas. God granted them almost fifty-three years together. The two years they spent in service in Tulsa resulted in lifelong friendships. While we as the children don’t remember a lot of verbal teaching, he molded and shaped our character by showing us how to live by his example. Through some events in life, God called him to a deeper consecration which led to a lifelong interest in mission work. He was ordained into the gospel ministry on March 15, 1983, by Min. Leo Classen.  His willingness to sacrifice material things for the work of the Lord is a testimony to his dedication. God blessed him with a special love for the Church in Mexico.

We as a family are at rest as we reflect on God’s leading through the sequence of events over the last several weeks. Even though his wish would have been to live longer, he had the grace to surrender his will and accept God’s plan for his life. God was merciful and spared him from suffering and granted him a special week in his own home surrounded by family and friends.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Glennis, three children: Wendell and Kandis, Cara and Darryl Koehn, and Barbara and Rick Koehn, all of Macon, Mississippi. Thirteen grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Three brothers: Merle and Brenda, Hartley, TX; Eldon and Paula, Roger and Jan, Macon, MS; two sisters: Joyce and Dale Koehn, Moundridge, KS; and Jeanette and James Nichols, Montrose, CO. In-laws: John Paul and June Unruh, Lamar, CO; Sharon and Merle Wedel, Bradley, AR; Dale and Donna Unruh, Muleshoe, TX; Becky and Steve Isaac, Montezuma, KS; and Joe and Karla Unruh, Columbus, MS; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both his parents, parents-in-law, and one niece.
