Mrs. Joy Adams Carlson, 102, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2022, at her residence in Macon, MS. Funeral services are planned for Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Independent Methodist Church in Macon, MS. Interment will follow in Salem Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Church from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to YMCA, 602 2 nd Ave N, Columbus, MS 39701, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Joy Adams Carlson was born in Macon, MS on July 27, 1920, to the late John Earl and Carrie Edna Taylor Adams. She graduated from Macon High School and later attended the University of Maryland. Joy’s life was a full one, as her personnel administration job with the United States Air Force took her all over the world. In her thirty-four years of employment with the USAF, she worked in offices in the United States, Europe and even a seven-year stint in Okinawa. Joy often said that the most enjoyable job she ever had was with the Armed Forces Radio Services in Hollywood, CA, where she was involved with the organization for entertainment for the servicemen overseas and the wounded ones in stateside hospitals. One of the most important tools in modern moviemaking, Introvision, was developed for use in by the military. Introvision is a special effects system that allows moviemakers to create a tiny set by using a human actor into that set by using special filming technique similar to Three-D. It is now used in many commercial movie productions. Joy’s last employed move took her to Montana for four years, where she met and married Lee Carlson. They moved to Denver, CO where they lived for several years before moving to Macon in 2002. Joy was a faithful member of Independent Methodist Church and was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Joy is preceded in death by her parents, spouse, Lee Carlson, sisters: Kate Adams Hinchey, Angeline “Angie” Gousett, and Nancy George Greenwood, three brothers: Richard Clinton “Dick” Adams, John Dewitt Adams, and Harold Earl Adams, Jr, and nephew Anthony Dewitt Adams.
Mrs. Joy survivors include nieces and nephews: Harold Earl Adams, Jr. (Brenda), Nancy Carol Adams Suggs (Bill), Emily Kay Adams Bahr(Jim), Richard Lorraine Adams(Vera), and Samuel Cater Greenwood(Billie) ; 6 great nieces and nephews and 7 great-great nieces and nephews.
