Johnny T Black

Johnny Black, 69, of Macon, MS passed away Monday, March 23, 2023 at Noxubee General Hospital. A funeral service is planned for Thursday, March 16, 2023 at 4:30 p.m. at Macedonia Community Church in Shuqualak, MS. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 2:30 until service time, Thursday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX  75231.  Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the service arrangements.

Johnny Black was born on January 4, 1954 in Kemper County, MS to the late John Thomas and Virgie Bell Porter Black. He was a graduate of West Kemper High School and then married the love of his life, Darlene White, on July 22, 1973. Johnny worked at Electric Mills for two years and then moved on to Delta-Macon (Boral) Brick company in Macon for eighteen years. After the brick plant ceased operation, Johnny was self-employed for five years at Needful Things in Starkville, MS. He then began working for Mississippi State University for over nineteen years. At the time of his death, he was the Superintendent for Sustainable Bioproducts at MSU.

Johnny loved a challenge, especially one that included fixing something that others had given up on. He was not only a skilled mechanic but was also a talented gardener and farmer. When he wasn’t working at Mississippi State or fixing something for a neighbor, Johnny liked to fish. He also enjoyed following his children to all of their ball games that he could. His most favored times in life were those spent with his family and friends.

Johnny is survived by his soul mate, Darlene and by two daughters: Carey Knight and Kelley Greer (Sean) and by one son: Taylor Black. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Jonathan Black, Madison Aycock (Hunter), Cage Palmer, Samantha Knight, Avery Knight, Paxton Greer and Kaelyn Bell Greer. Johnny was born into a large family and of his siblings, he is survived by his sisters: Roma Little, Patsy Ivy (Wayne), Judy Wilcox (Paul), and Lou Lowe (Willie) and his brothers: William Black and Danny Black (Donna). He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Lowe and brothers Edward Black and Willard Black.
