John L. Holcombe, 82, passed away on Monday, November 05, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in West Point.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 08, 2018 from 5:30-8:00pm at Cockrell Funeral Home. Funeral services will be on Friday; November 09, 2018, at 11:00am from Elon Baptist Church with burial to follow at the Church Cemetery.

John L. Holcombe was born April 07, 1936 in Clarksdale, MS, to the late Eugene and Rosa Toney Holcombe. He spent his childhood working on his grandfather’s dairy farm and picking cotton. He was a graduate of Noxubee High School where he played in the marching band. After high school he worked at Macon Truck Stop where he met his wife, Lucy Lee; the two were married August 26, 1960. They made their home in Macon where together they owned and operated the Burger Wheel Restaurant and Lucy’s Kwick Shop until 1987. After selling their business Mr. Holcombe continued to work at Dinsmore’s Chevrolet and later Dinsmore Farms until finally retiring at the age of 80. John L. was dearly loved by his family, known for his kindness and being a friend to all. He never spoke a harsh word and was quick to forgive. He was a wonderful mentor and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was an avid and patient gardener and very talented woodworker, making furniture and other trinkets to share with others. John L. was a very talented man and had a gift for repairing things, he could fix ANYTHING. He enjoyed music and could play several different instruments but enjoyed playing the guitar most. He loved cooking and was especially fond of making his famous Pecan Pie! John L. loved God and his church, and he was a very active member of Elon Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher.  He spent time studying the Bible daily and preparing his Sunday School lesson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son John Anthony Holcombe and one sister Jean Britt.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lucy Holcombe; two daughters: Tina Holcombe Ferrell (Dave) and Michelle Fason (John T.) of Carrollton, AL; five grandchildren: Zach Ferrell, Alex Ferrell, Shane Ferrell, Cheryl Hewitt (Phillip),  and Brad Fason (Vicky); four great grandchildren: Taylor Grace, Ford and Payton Hewitt and Camryn Fason; and three brothers: Ed Holcombe (Joyce) of West Point, Riley Holcombe of Guntersville, AL and Norman Holcombe (Carol) of Macon.

The family would like to acknowledge the love and kindness shown by their special sister and aunt, Carolyn Rigdon.  We all know we can count on her whenever we call.

Funeral services will be officiated by Bro Payton Myers. Pallbearers will be Robert Stevens, Sid Dinsmore, Ken Misso, Chuck Misso, Jeb Stewart, Marty Holcombe, Jeff Holcombe and Jonathan Sellers. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men’s Sunday School Class of Elon Baptist Church and Mr Holcombe’s Nephews.

In lieu of Flowers the family requests that memorials be made to The Baptist Children’s Village, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Elon Baptist Chruch.
