James “Ben” Benson Tubb, 71, passed away at home in the early hours of June 2, after a long battle with cancer. He was tended lovingly by his longtime partner and high school sweetheart, Malinda. There will not be any public services held at this time.
Ben was born on October 11, 1951 in Cleveland, Miss. to Jack and Gloria Tubb. The middle son, Ben set himself apart with a fabulous sense of humor, a gift for shenanigans, and a passion for entertaining. He was a gifted, self taught musician who played in several bands, most notably the Meridian-based group Sowashee, where he played rhythm guitar and sang.
When not on the stage, Ben was most at home in the outdoors, working with his hands and his animals. He was a noted hunt guide for most of his life, having introduced many celebrities and dignitaries to the natural beauty of Mississippi. He bred and trained world class hunting dogs that went on to work all over the world.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Gloria, his brother William “Luke” Tubb and mother of Laura: Betty C. Tubb. Ben leaves behind his sweetheart Malinda; daughters Deanna (Chip) and Laura (David); sons: Shay Sumrall (Renee) and William Myers (Carri) and grandchildren Ana Lauren, Dru, and Riley and 19 other grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
