Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend went home to see the Lord on Sunday, May 21, 2023. She was 93 years old. A funeral service is planned for Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church, 105 Dent St., Macon, MS at 11:00 a.m. Bro. Bill Ross will officiate the services. Interment will follow in Brooksville Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, Operation Christmas Child Program, 105 Dent St., Macon, MS 39341. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Elsie Ruth Mapp King was born in Mangham, LA on November 30, 1929, to the late Allen and Elma Triplett Mapp. She was a graduate from Brooksville High School (May 1947). In 1948, she married Lester King, and they moved to Cliftonville, MS to raise their family. Elsie Ruth had an outgoing personality that made everyone she met feel comfortable in her presence. She liked to be busy and, in addition to being a housewife and mother, she took on many roles in the community. These activities included being a Candy Striper at Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle Hospital in Columbus for over twenty years and was also a member of their volunteer bowling team. She volunteered at the Brooksville Library as a librarian. Elsie Ruth was a longtime member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of the American Revolution, in which she served in various official positions. She had a huge passion for history and had amassed a large collection of books and articles dating back to the Civil War. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, working puzzles, sewing, and quilting. She hosted quilting parties and she loved to play the game of Bingo. Elsie Ruth was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Macon, MS.
Elsie Ruth King is survived by her children Carol Iris Mastery (Don) of St. Petersburg, FL, Dan King (Elizabeth) of Brooksville, MS, Beverly Cole (Dave) of Shelbyville, KY, Sue Chancellor (Prentiss) of Macon, MS and Doc King (Liz) of Columbus, MS. She is also survived by 14 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lester, son Steven and three siblings.
