Mrs. Maude Elizabeth Strong Combs, 105, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the Trinity Nursing Home in Columbus, MS. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Shuqualak United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow in Shuqualak Cemetery with Bro. Larry Yarber officiating. The family requests “No Flowers, Please”. Memorials may be directed to the Trinity Nursing Home, 300 Airline Rd, Columbus, MS 39702 or the Methodist Children’s Home, 805 N Flag Chapel Rd, Jackson, MS 39209. Maude Elizabeth Strong , known to one and all as “Honey”(a nickname she acquired as a small child) was born in Ramsey, Louisiana on November 16, 1913 to the late Roy Dwyer Strong and Katie Jones Strong. The family moved to Ovette, MS before finally making their home in Shuqualak, MS, where Miss Strong met her husband-to-be: William Edgar Combs. After their marriage, the couple moved to Jackson, MS where she worked at the Emporium. Later they moved back to Shuqualak where Mrs. Honey worked for the Bank of Macon and then served as City Clerk for the City of Shuqualak until her retirement. She was very active in the Shuqualak United Methodist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the Women’s Society. She was active in and served as a President of the Macon Pilot Club. In 2010, Mrs. Honey moved to Trinity Healthcare in Columbus, MS where she enjoyed playing bingo, painting pottery and listening to music. Mrs. Honey also enjoyed flower gardening all of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three grandchildren, Bob Dugan, John Marcus Dugan and Erica Coleman.
Maude Elizabeth Strong “Honey” Combs is survived by her daughter: Nelia Kate Combs Anderson (Marcus) of Shuqualak, MS and by four grandchildren: Betsy (Robert)Dugan, Mark (Susan) Anderson, Melody (James) Jones, and Gail (David)Thomas; Also left to mourn her passing are six great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind one niece; Yvonne Strong; one nephew: Al Strong and many, many friends.
