Mrs. Doris Vernon, 96, of Macon, MS passed away Friday, November 18, 2022, at Noxubee County Nursing Home. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at Butler Cemetery, Shuqualak, MS. Memorials may be made to St Jude's Childrens Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the service arrangements.
Doris Higginbotham was born in Noxubee County, Mississippi on November 10, 1926, to the late Albert Lenton and Annie Kate Butler Higginbotham. Her mom passed away when Doris was 10 years old, and Doris helped to raise her siblings. She also helped her dad with picking cotton, putting up hay and whatever else needed doing around the farm. She graduated from Mashulaville High School. After World War II was over, she met and married Moses William Vernon. She was a homemaker until she and her husband went to work for United Technologies. She worked there for thirty years and retired. Doris was a member of Noxubee Full Gospel Christian Center in Macon, MS. In her retirement years, she enjoyed gardening, her flowers, cooking, going on beach and mountain vacations, and watching football on her TV. She loved visiting with her family and her friends, of whom she had many. Doris is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William Vernon, sisters, Katherine Moore, Sally Walker, and Clytee Kinard, her stepmother Grace Weaver Higginbotham, and stepsister Ruth Haggard.
Doris is survived by her daughter Evelyn Smith (Richard) of West Point, MS, son, Moses Vernon (Judy) of Oxford, MS; a sister, Dean Vandevender of Preston, MS; five grandchildren, Amy Buckley (Bob), Shannon Greenan (Daryl), Dee Bussanmas (Scott), Lee Dugan (James), and William Vernon; ten great grandchildren: Chantz Smith (Samantha), Jake Smith, Willa Grace Greenam, Taylor Murphree (Kadon), Marley Perkins, Sarah Paige Perkins, Charlie Perkins, Maggie Dugan, Gracie Dugan, and Jace Dugan; three great- great grandchildren, Kase Murphree, Aidan Jacob Smith and Damon Frances Smith; a host of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Vandevender, Larry Walker, Gene Moore, Eddie Coleman, Chantz Smith and Jake Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Bro. Gerald Butler and special niece, Libby Smith.
