Dawn Conner Mccann

Mrs. Dawn Conner McCann, 71, of Shuqualak, MS passed away Thursday, September 7, 2023, at her residence surrounded by her family.  A funeral is planned for Sunday, September 10, 2023, at Macon Presbyterian Church, 455 8th St., Macon MS 39341 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Briggs Chapel Cemetery, 8053 Hwy 498 E, Porterville MS 39352. Visitation will be held at Macon Presbyterian Church Saturday, September 9, 2023, from 5-7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 800 Baldwin Road S., Lake Cormorant, MS  38641 or Samaritans Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, N.C.  28607.  Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.

Dawn Conner was born December 9, 1951, as the middle of three daughters to Bill and Dot Conner. She graduated in 1969 from Dekalb High School, where she was voted the Future Farmers of America Sweetheart. Dawn met her future husband, Richard McCann, in her first week at East Mississippi Junior College, where he invited her to ride on his motorcycle and learned the hard way that girls were not allowed to leave campus without permission. After he asked fifty plus times for her hand, she finally agreed, and they were married in Dekalb on August 13, 1972, after which they attended Mississippi State University. After college, they moved to Shuqualak, with brief moves to Sumter, South Carolina and Phoenix, Arizona. Dawn worked as a customer service representative at Citizens National Bank in Macon for ten years and was a life member of Macon Junior Auxiliary. Dawn played piano for many years at Shuqualak Presbyterian Church, and later was a member of Macon Presbyterian Church, where she served on the Women in the Church Committee and taught children’s Sunday School. Dawn and Richard loved spending time with others in their home and attending Mississippi State baseball games. She was a loving mother to Rick (Katy), Gabe (Sara), Matt (Amanda) and Molly (Shane Irvin) and the adoring Marmee/Mamo to Maggie, Ella, Conner, Liam, Samuel, Ezra, Andrew, Claire, Peter and Benny. She is survived by her husband, Richard McCann, two sisters: Gloria Cumberland and Kim Davis and several nephews and a niece.  Dawn is preceded in death by her parents.
