Our dear mother, Carol Joan Johnson was born to Johnny and Marie Yost Nichols on June 17, 1939, in Montezuma, Kansas. She battled with lung issues most of her life. She courageously fought this battle and peacefully passed to her eternal reward on November 11, 2024, while her dearest friends sat close by enjoying one of her prized activities, setting a puzzle. She reached the age of 85 years.
Mom grew up in the Montezuma area and received her high school education from the Montezuma public school system. She worked for a time as a secretary at Unruh Foster John Deere equipment dealership.
Mother answered the call of God to salvation and was baptized into the Church of God in Christ Mennonite by (Uncle) Minister Claud Unruh from Montezuma, Kansas on January 22, 1954. She was faithful to her vows until the end.
Mom met the man of her life, Arlo Johnson in Montezuma, Kansas 1954. They were married on December 2, 1956 by minister Willard Johnson. Their home was blessed with 5 children. They enjoyed over 60 years together. Mom left us with a legacy of dad and mom’s life in her diaries. She would often refer back to them.
Mother faced numerous trials in her life, particularly with her health. Even though mother would express her worries we knew she had a firm faith in God. She cared deeply for other people’s well being, to the point of causing personal anxiety. She was concerned for each of her children and grandchildren's spiritual welfare.
Mother was a giving person almost to a fault. She loved to buy gifts for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Books were one of her passions and in the last few years she had her children and grandchildren take them out of her bookcases and she made sure her great grandchildren had a good supply of children’s books. In dad and mom’s years of living in Maine she made many friends in that community and Bridgewater congregation. She was willing to further dad’s desire to spread the gospel and had much company in their years of service there. Holidays were special to mom and she was a tremendous cook and fixed many a big meal.
As she neared the end it was her strong desire to be cared for at home. The family chose to give this care through wonderful caregivers Darlene Rogers, Latoya Clark, and Sharonda Gray. Some of her children and grandchildren affectionately cared for and spent nights with her in her last weeks. She was thankful for all her friends who spent time with her through her long evenings.
Her survivors include her children; three daughters; Karen Peaster, Janette and Richard Johnson, Glenda and Kendall Jost; all of Brooksville MS; two sons; Samuel and Lois Johnson, and Steven and Kate Johnson, both of Macon MS; twenty grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce and Crist Gearig, Brooksville MS, Elaine Unruh, Macon, MS, one brother, Galen and Carolyn Nichols, Macon, MS.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlo Johnson, her parents and parents-in-law, one son-in-law Waldean Peaster, one brother-in-law, two great grand-daughters, and one great grand-son.
