Elzie (Bob) Lee Vandevender

March 25, 1928 — June 5, 2019

Mr. Elzie “Bob” Vandevender, 91, passed away on June 5, 2019 at his residence near Macon. His funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 12:00 Noon at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel in Macon with Bro. Gerald Butler officiating. Interment will be in the Jackson Field Cemetery near Preston, MS. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until service time Saturday. Memorials are requested to be made to St. Jude Children‘s Hospital 262 Danny Thomas Way Memphis, TN 38105. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the service arrangements.

Bob Vandevender was born in Winston County, MS on March 25, 1928 to the late Earnest Christopher and Mary Onie Patterson Vandevender. He attended school in Winston County and was a school bus driver who used a jeep as a bus for a couple of years to pick up children in remote areas of the county. Bob was a hard-working multi-talented man who was known as a master mechanic. He also was a cattleman and farmer.  Bob took joy in his later years knowing that he did not have to get up and go to work. After retirement, he spent much of his time each day reading his Bible.

Bob Vandevender is survived by his former wife: Dessie Vandevender and by his two daughters: Sharon Allen of Hattiesburg, MS and Wanda Kay Martin of Carthage, MS. He is also survived by two sisters: Christine Clark of Shuqualak, MS and Earnestine Lee of Preston, MS as well as by three brothers: Elvis Vandevender and Punk Vandevender, both of Preston, MS and Elvin Vandevender of Macon. Bob also leaves five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren to mourn his passing. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Pennsylvania Clark.
