Barbara Young Jernigan

Barbara Ann Young Jernigan, 82, passed away on Thursday; August 16, 2018; at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS.

Mrs. Jernigan was born January 16, 1936 in Birmingham, AL, to the late Vernon Benton and Mamie Lula Wilson Young. She graduated from West End High School in Birmingham and then furthered her education by attending Howard College, which is now known as Samford University. She worked as a bank teller and was affiliated with several banks throughout her life. Mrs Jernigan was a very family oriented, she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she loved her family unconditionally. Known for her impeccable memory, she always had a way of making others feel special. Mrs Jernigan loved to send greeting cards to all of her family for every occasion, she even continued this sentiment once her health began to fail and she was no longer able to select the cards herself, sending her husband on errands to purchase cards, making sure that birthdays and holidays were never forgotten. She also enjoyed nature and admired God’s wonderful creations. She was especially fond of butterflies, hummingbirds, rainbows and sunsets. She was a member of Shuqualak Baptist Church, active in church serving in many different capacities such as Sunday School Teacher, director of missionary societies and head of the local Baptist Association of Missionaries. She loved God and was passionate about doing His work. She was known as a Prayer Warrior and was very talented with her knowledge of the Bible and ability to quote scripture. She was a dedicated reader of the Bible for as long as her sight permitted and she was a passionate witness, sharing God’s word and Plan of Salvation with anyone who would listen.

Mrs Jernigan is preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Aubry C. Jernigan Jr. and two grandchildren: Jessica Corrine Jernigan and Terry Michael “T.J.” Jernigan Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Aubry C. Jernigan; one daughter: Allison Jernigan Newell (Jeff) of Meridian; two sons: Doug Jernigan (Joyce) of Meridian and Mike Jernigan (Dianna) of Sardis; one sister: Phyllis Gail Prince (Jimmy) of Philadelphia, MS; and eight grandchildren: Jake Newell, Anna Leigh Newell, Casey Newell, Brooks Newell, Katie Gunter, Haley Gunter, Joseph Jernigan and Chloe Jernigan.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00pm on Saturday; August 18, 2018 from Shuqualak Baptist Church. A visitation will be held from noon until the service time at the Church. Interment will follow at the Shuqualak Cemetery. Services will be officiated by Bro. James E. “Jim” Prince and Bro. Gerald Butler. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon, is entrusted with final arrangements.

Acting as Pallbearers will be: Eric Prince, Phillip Prince, Joseph Jernigan, Jake Newell, Doug Jones, Paul Prince, Joshua Jones and Bradley Clyde Poole. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Deacons of Shuqualak Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Shuqualak Baptist Church, Soul Harbor Pentecostal Church  or to the donor’s favorite charity.
