Amanda H. Gates, 95, of Macon, MS passed away on May 31, 2022 at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian, MS. A private service was held later. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon was in charge of the service arrangements.

Amanda Hudnall Gates was born on April 5, 1927, to the late Homer and Lucille Adams in Livingston, Alabama. She was a graduate of Mississippi State College for Women and later earned her Master’s degree in Spanish from Mississippi State University. She began working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D.C. where she met and married her husband, Jim Gates, in 1949. She continued working for the FBI until she became a mother at which time she became a stay-at-home mom.

After her husband’s retirement, the family moved to Macon in 1963. Amanda taught Spanish at Noxubee County High School and later at Central Academy until her retirement in the early 1970s. Being an avid golfer, Amanda played golf every day possible with her husband and her friends. She also enjoyed quilting.

Amanda is survived by her daughter: Lauren Gates of Metairie, LA and by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and by one son: Leslie Gates.
