Aliene Poag, 62, of Sturgis, MS. passed away Sunday, November 26, 2023, at her residence. The funeral service will be held at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel in Macon, MS on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Oddfellows Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation, 800 Avery Blvd N #100, Ridgeland, MS 39157. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Aliene Poag was born and grew up in Macon, MS to Harry Edgar and Audrey Harmon Poag. She was a graduate of Central Academy and received her bachelor's degree in journalism at MUW. Aliene began her career as a journalist at the Meridian Star. Later, she worked in journalism for the Commercial Dispatch and the Starkville Daily News. Due to health issues, Aliene was forced to retire from work early. She was a great journalist and was a very talented poet. Aliene helped research and document her family’s genealogy. Some of Aliene's favorite past-times were crafts for her great nieces and nephews and playing the dulcimer. Aliene was a member of Elon Baptist Church. Aliene is preceded in death by her parents, a sister Judy Poag Brown and two brothers, William Harvey Poag and Harry E. Poag, Jr.
Aliene’s survivors include two sisters, Ellen Shaw (Odie) of Sturgis and Betsy Jones (Bucky) of Starkville, MS; two brothers, Dean Poag (Sandy) of Hanceville, AL and Steven Poag of Blacksburg, S.C., numerous nieces and nephews, numerous great nieces and nephews and numerous great-great nieces and nephews.
