Wayne D. Joyner, 83, of Shuqualak, MS passed away at his residence on Monday, January 22. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Macedonia United Methodist Church, near Shuqualak, MS. at 11:00 a.m. with Bro. Ray Luke and Bro. Dewayne Warren officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery with military honors. Memorials may be made to St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis TN 38105. Cockrell Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with arrangements.
Wayne D. Joyner was born in Meridian, MS on February 16, 1934 to the late Ernest and Ola Mae Alawine Joyner. He graduated from Collinsville High School and later met and married the love of his life, Margaret Garrett. Mr. Joyner joined the United States Air Force and served for four years, during part of which he was stationed in England. He was a Tech Sergeant and in charge of airplane maintenance and also of paratroopers on the airplane. After his military service, he returned home and began working at Southern Pipe & Supply. He also began going to night school and soon moved up into management with the company. His job required him to move around the country a lot over his career. After his retirement, Mr. Joyner moved to Shuqualak, MS where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church near Shuqualak where he served as church treasurer and song director. Mr. Joyner was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching baseball.
Mr. Joyner is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Joyner of Shuqualak, MS; two daughters, Debbie Dodson of Sulphur, LA and Suzanne Lasyon of Columbus, MS; one son Jerry Joyner of Rydale, GA; two sisters, Jan Heffner and Jennifer Thomas both of Gautier, MS; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
