Gilbert Aaron Gregg

February 23, 1953 — March 28, 2017

Gilbert Aaron Gregg of Shuqualak, MS, the son of Robert Lee and Elsie D. Eaves Gregg of Mashualaville, MS, was born February 23, 1953. He went home to be with the Lord from Anderson Regional Hospital in Meridian after a 4-year battle with cancer on March 28, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Janie R. VanDevender Gregg; and one son, Daniel Chase Gregg and his wife, Fengna Zheng Gregg; three international children, Benjamin Ladiges (Germany), Maxime Rimar (Russia), and Nina Nochino (Japan); three brothers, Cecil D. (Gloria) Gregg of Louisville, Larry G. Gregg of Mashualaville, and Harry L. (Mary) Gregg; one sister, Eileen Higginbotham of Mashualaville; three grandchildren, Madelyn Grace Gregg of Pearl, Gabriella Gregg and Grayson Gregg of Cuba, Alabama; two International grandchildren Anselm Ladiges (Germany) and Sergey Rimar (Russia), and several beloved nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

Gilbert graduated 8th grade from Shuqualak Attendance Center and finished high school in 1972 at Noxubee County High School. He was a lifelong truck driver, starting his driving career right out of high school with Prince Lumber Company in Shuqualak and drove for Atlas Roofing, his most recent employer, for almost 20 years. He enjoyed going to the beach, especially with Chase and his “adopted children” Kendrick and Tyler Higginbotham when they were growing up, traveling and playing pool at home with the international students who became family, boating and fishing and cooking out with his friends in Shuqualak and at Dalewood. However, his heart was in his work, which he loved doing more than anything else. His three grandchildren were the most precious gift he owned. He enjoyed playing with them and spoiling them a little. Gilbert was loved by everyone who ever knew him and he knew no enemies. He always had a smile and something funny to tell you, a quick wit and a positive outlook on everything. His word to his son was “others” and helping others was something he felt strongly about doing.

Funeral service for Gilbert will be held Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Shuqualak Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Interment will follow in Vernon Cemetery.
