Arthur S. Varner, Jr.

June 17, 1939 — February 21, 2017

Mr. Arthur S. Varner, Jr., 77, of Macon, MS passed away at Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle Hospital on Tuesday, February 21, 2016 after a long illness. His funeral service will be held on Friday, February 24 at Macon Presbyterian Church at 10:00 A.M. with Rev. Ricky Glenn officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Soule Chapel Cemetery near Macon. Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to Central Academy, P.O. Box 231, Macon MS 39341.

Arthur Varner, Jr. was a native and lifetime resident of Noxubee County, MS. He was born on June 17, 1939 to the late Arthur Samuel and Mary Louise Moore Varner. He attended the local elementary school and graduated from Macon High School. He continued his education by attending Mississippi State University for four years before beginning his business career as an accountant for his father at Noxubee Tire Service, Varner Service Station and Macon Oil Company, which was a distributor for Sinclair oil and gas products. He and his sister later purchased Macon Oil Company and Noxubee Tire Service. They operated the businesses for several years and he continued on as the accountant. In the 1970’s, they sold the businesses to a local businessman and Mr. Varner worked with the companies as an accountant until his retirement. He was a longtime member of Macon Presbyterian Church where he served as treasurer for forty years. He was married to Gracie Mims, who preceded him in death. Mr. Varner was a Boy Scout in his youth. He enjoyed playing games online and traveling.

Mr. Varner is survived by one daughter: Becky Lynn of Biloxi, MS and by one sister: Doris Mitchener of Macon, as well as two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
