Vera "Sweetnin" Cockrell Russell

Mrs. Vera “Sweetnin” Russell, 88, of Macon, MS passed away on Saturday, Nov 5, 2016 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, MS. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel in Macon, MS. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. There will not be an interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS. 39702

Mrs. Russell was born on January 30, 1928 in Macon, MS to the late Julian F. and Iona Sly Cockrell. She graduated from Brooksville High School in Brooksville, MS and attended Marnello Beauty School for nine months. She later began working for Senter’s Hardware and Appliance Co. in Macon, MS, a job that she held until her retirement after 27 years of service. Mrs. Russell was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Macon as well as a member of the Ageless Wonders, the Jolly 20 Club, and the Magnolia Supper Club, all in Macon. She also enjoyed playing “Bunko” with a group of her friends. Mrs. Russell was known as “Sweetnin” to everyone and was a gracious and out-going lady who made friends everywhere she went. She was very proud of all of her family and loved any occasion to be with them. After her retirement and the death of her husband, longtime Noxubee County Sheriff Cecil Russell, Mrs. Sweetnin moved to the Trinity Place Retirement Community in Columbus, MS where she soon became known as the “voice of Trinity Place”. Her catch-phrase “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done!” was heard on the local television station in advertisements touting the retirement village and she was featured in many of it’s promotional videos.

Mrs. Sweetnin was preceaded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister, and one son-in-law: Hayes Daniel. She is survived by one daughter: Julia Ann Daniel of Starkville, MS and by one son: Rusty Russell (Shelly) of Crawford, MS. She also leaves behind one sister: Jean Lavender of Clinton, MS as well as four grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
