Mrs. Dorothy Jensen Spurgeon, 89, of Brooksville, MS passed away at Noxubee County Nursing Home in Macon, MS on Wednesday, 17, 2016. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. with Bro. Jay Spiller and Bro. Danny Avery officiating. Interment will follow at Brooksville Cemetery. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until service time at the church. The family respectfully requests that no flowers be sent, but that memorials be made to the Brooksville Cemetery Fund, c/o Melanie Hines, 586 Hines Rd., Brooksville, MS 39739 or to Brooksville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 52, Brooksville, MS 39739.

Dorothy Jensen was born on May 8, 1927 to the late Christian Nels and Nannie Mae Gray Jensen in Macon. After graduating from Noxubee County High School, she married Ralph Spurgeon and together they enjoyed 71 years as an inseparable couple. Mrs. Spurgeon was a full time housewife and homemaker who loved her job. She especially enjoyed gardening, crocheting, and quilting. She was active in several local associations, including the Brooksville Homemaker’s Club, the Noxubee Garden Club, and the Holiday Club. She was also a member of Brooksville Baptist Church. Everyone, family and friend alike, always called Mrs. Spurgeon “Mama Dot”.

Mrs. Spurgeon is survived by her husband: Ralph Spurgeon of Brooksville; one daughter: Brenda Spurgeon of Jackson, MS; and two sons: Bobby Spurgeon and Paul Spurgeon, both of Brooksville, MS. She is also survived by one sister: Audrey Powell of Jackson, Alabama and by one brother: Eugene Jensen of Baton Rouge, LA. She also leaves behind three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Spurgeon was preceded in death by her parents; one sister: Myrtle Henley; one brother: Nels Jensen; and by one grandson: Robbie Spurgeon.

Pallbearers will be Billy Gray, Randy Gray, David Taylor, Louis Rowles, Jim Rowles, Robert Powell, Bob Powell, and Walter Hines. Honorary pallbearers will be Noxubee County Nursing Home Staff, Quality Hospice Care Staff, Caregiver, Paula Malone, Dr. Susan Taylor, Dr. Naim Rahman, Cecil Boswell, Grover Hankins, Tommy Campbell, Robert Cunningham, Doyle Cummins, and Jay Chancellor.
