Dorothy Adams Hardin, a devoted wife, loving mother, and lively friend, died Thursday, February 25, 2016. She was 96 years old.
Dotsy, as she was known by all, was born November 1, 1919, in Macon, the third child of Vernard Adams and Cornelia Jackson Adams. She grew up in the family home on Hale Street with her older brother Charlie Morgan and older sister Mary Lou.
A tomboy as a little girl, she was always tough, spirited, and fun. A beloved family story recounts how as a young teenager she was swimming with other children in Hashuqua Creek one Sunday after church when she was bitten by a water moccasin (she would carry a visible scar on her forearm her entire life). Her father saw what had happened from the riverbank and started in to get her, but Dotsy waved him off, yelling at her Daddy not to ruin his new Sunday suit. She swam to the bank by herself.
In 1937, as a seventeen year old, Dotsy married Edward Faser Hardin, also of Macon. They had two children, Barbara, in 1939, and Faser, in 1946. Dotsy and Ed enjoyed thirty-five years of loving marriage until Ed’s death in 1972. They were faithful members of the First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed a wide circle of relatives and friends in and around Macon. For several years Dotsy was the host of the "Morning News with Dotsy Hardin" on Bob Chisholm's locally-owned WMBC Radio Station where she would report who was in town visiting relatives, give the weather report, but most importantly, announce the high scorer at the weekly bridge club.
In her later decades, she lived in a single apartment next to her sister Mary Lou, who never married. Dotsy worked for many years at Mimi’s, a women’s boutique, and was one of the first and most stylish of the women golfers at Zach Brooks Golf Course, where she kept a regular foursome. She was also a fierce bridge player, a skilled needle worker, and a prolific knitter.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Barbara Crespino, her son-in-law Bobby Crespino, and her grandson Robert Crespino. She is survived by her son, Faser Hardin, her daughter-in-law Annie Chadwick, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.
The family will greet visitors at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel in Macon, MS beginning at 1pm on Wednesday, March 2. The funeral service will be at 3, followed by a brief graveside service at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
As Dotsy adored flowers, the family welcomes the gift of flowers at the funeral. Memorial donations in her honor can be made to Elderly Care Center, 496 Magnolia Drive in Macon, where Dotsy spent her final years aided by a staff of loving and dedicated caregivers.
