Edith M. Hummer

February 16, 1922 — January 27, 2016

Edith Ware McLeod Hummer, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 27, 2016. She died peacefully at the Bee Hive Home in Louisville, following an extended illness.

Mrs. Hummer was born February 16, 1922, in Clarke County, MS, the only child of John Milie McLeod and Nancy Lee Ware McLeod. At an early age, she moved to Macon with her parents and graduated from Macon High School in 1939. Following graduation, she worked for the Farmers Home Administration in Little Rock, AR. She later returned to Macon where she continued her work with the Farmers Home Administration. On July 13, 1947, she married Warren Earl Hummer of Prairie Point, MS, where they lived for the next 56 years and reared their three daughters.

From 1959 to 1984, she was employed by the Noxubee County Welfare Department. A woman of deep faith, she was a member of X-Prairie Methodist Church for many years and later Independent Methodist Church in Macon. She was also a member of the Dancing Rabbit Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution as well as Colonial Dames and the Noxubee Historical Society.

Mrs. Hummer was a very devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life revolved around her church, family, and friends. She loved country living, gardening, cooking, and reading. Genealogy was a favorite hobby, and she spent innumerable hours researching her family history. She was gracious and hospitable, frequently entertaining friends and family in her home. Humble and unassuming, she had a quiet, easy way that naturally drew people to her. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren share countless memories of time spent with her. She and her husband lived in Prairie Point on the family land they cherished until 2003, when they moved to Louisville, MS, to be closer to their three daughters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her grandson, William Hummer Pieralisi. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Hummer Peters (Glenn), Ann Hummer Woodson (Jim), and Alice Hummer Pieralisi; seven grandchildren, Pamela Peters Bixler (Gaillard), Judith Peters Rogers, Caroline Ware Peters, James Glenn Peters, Jr. (Larkin), James Randall Woodson, III (Shannon), Benjamin Warren Woodson (Anna), and Anna Jackson Pieralisi; and sixteen great grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the Independent Methodist Church in Macon, MS, at 2 p.m. Visitation will be at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time, followed by interment at Odd Fellows Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Hummer’s devoted caregivers, Bessie Wells, Hilda Lowrey, Jessie Carter, and Marjorie Kennedy, the entire Bee Hive staff, and Sta-Home Hospice for their faithful and attentive care. Memorials may be made to the Independent Methodist Church, P.O. Box 421, Macon, MS 39341.
