Janie Therrell Wood, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on July 6, 2015 at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon, Mississippi. She will be laid to rest beside her son, William Baker Hunter, at the X-Prairie Church in Prairie Point, Mississippi. Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 3:00 P.M. from Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel and Dr. Andy Pearson will officiate at the service. Visitation will be held from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Any memorials may be made to the X-Prairie Cemetery Fund, C/O Robert Hunter 3520 Jefferson Street, Macon, MS 39341. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon, MS (www.cockrellfuneralhome.com) is entrusted with the service arrangements.
Janie Wood was born in Aberdeen, Mississippi on March 18, 1928 to the late J.S. and Augusta Baker Therrell with one older brother John S. Therrell. She lived in Prairie Point, Mississippi and attended school in Macon and Aberdeen. She first attended college at The University for Women in Columbus, Mississippi before transferring to Ole Miss and graduating with a degree in Education and was a member of Chi Omega Fraternity. In 1949 she was crowned Aberdeen’s Miss Hospitality.
Janie was married to Robert J. Hunter and had three sons; Robert J. Hunter, Jr., William Baker Hunter, and Roane Therrell Hunter. They divorced and she married Hershel Wallace Wood and had a daughter, Rebecca.
She was Janie to all of her friends, Miss Janie to all of her children’s friends and Gaga to all of her grandchildren and their friends. She was an awesome cook, loved her farm in the prairie, and was an excellent cattlewoman who raised registered Herefords. Her many passions included traveling, hunting, fishing, and scuba diving. Janie lived her entire adult life in Noxubee County, serving as one of the first women board members at Central Academy.
She is survived by her children, Robert J. Hunter, Jr. (Lisa), Roane Therrell Hunter (Eva) and daughter Rebecca Wood Jackson (Martin) and step-children John Wood (Barbara) and Pam Wood. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a nephew Sim Therrell.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Hershel Wood, son, William Baker Hunter, and brother, John S. Therrell.
Before his passing, her son Bill was her primary caregiver over the last several years as her illness progressed and was a true angel to her. The family would also like to thank her recent caregivers Ms. Annie Allen and Ms. Virgie Stewart and the incredible staff at Noxubee General Hospital for their loving and tender care.
