LUELLA MAE KOEHN

MONTEZUMA, KS - Our mother, beloved grandmother, special aunt and friend to many, Luella Mae Unruh Koehn was born on March 20, 1926 into the home of Minister Albert and Amanda Koehn Unruh. Soon after Mom's 89thbirthday she became seriously ill. Mom was ready to go home and the Lord graciously came for her in the morning of April 6, 2015.
Mom spent her growing up years in Montezuma. She often talked about the times when her father was out on Peace Crusades and lengthy revival calls. With determination and hope for the future, their family survived the 'dirty thirties'.
After giving her heart to the Lord, she was baptized by David J. Koehn in 1940. With joy she served the Lord all of her life.
Mom became Mrs. Melvin Koehn on June 1, 1946. They were the first couple to be married in the 'new' church in Montezuma. Jerry, Roland, Lynn Dale and Kenny Ray were the four boys born into this home. Even though life wasn't always easy, she supported Dad through the many challenges the years brought to us. We lived in 21 different locations during 23 years, but Mom cheerfully accepted those moves without complaint.
Dad's untimely death left Mom a widow at the age of 52. It became her mission to show support to all new widows, sending them letters to comfort and encourage.
Daily devotions were important to Mom; anyone with her at the close of day was invited to pray with her. Lists, notes, journals, letters and clippings were paramount in her life. Although she worked many jobs, being a dorm mother at the college in Scooba, Mississippi was a highlight for 21 years.
We as grandchildren vividly remember many good times spent with Grandma. Because of the love our grandparents shared, she always stressed to us that we also marry for love rather than outward possessions.
Remaining with happy memories are her children, Jerald and wife, Mary, Scooba, Mississippi, Roland and wife, Marcia, Epes, Alabama, Lynn Dale and wife, Betty, Lebanon Oregon, and Kenneth Ray and wife, Denise, Faunsdale, Alabama; thirteen grandchildren; and twenty-nine great grandchildren; her sister, Verbena, Mrs. Paul Yost, Montezuma; and brother, Denton Unruh of Dodge City. Preceding her in death are her parents, her husband, two brothers, one sister, one sister in-law and one brother in-law.
Bethel Home was a haven to our mother. She thoroughly enjoyed the years spent there. We thank you for the wonderful care you gave to her.
Funeral service will be held Friday, April 10, 2015 at Southern Star Mennonite Church in Geiger Alabama at 10:30 a.m. with burial following at the Souls Chapel Cemetery. Suggested memorials are to Bethel Home, 300 S. Aztec St, Montezuma, Kansas 67867. Thoughts and memories may be shared in the online guest book atwww.cockrellfuneralhome.com
