Lucille Morgan Spell Reeves
Macon, MS

Mrs. Lucille Morgan Spell Reeves, 91, the longtime Society Editor of the Macon Beacon, passed away on January 17, 2015, at Noxubee General Hospital. Mrs. Reeves, a Macon native, was born to the late William Elmo and Jimmie Thompson Morgan on August 7, 1923. She was a graduate of Macon High School and attended Mississippi State College for Women. During her time in college, she met and married Keith Spell of Lake Cormorant, MS, who was a student attending Mississippi State University at the time. After a short time in Bakersfield, CA, during World War II, the couple returned to Macon and made their home there. During her earlier working years, Mrs. Reeves worked at various offices in the Macon area, including those at the Borden Plant and at Moore and Woods Commission Co. She finally arrived at the Macon Beacon, where she soon rose to be the Editor of Society News, a position she held until her retirement over 25 years later.
Mrs. Reeves was very active in her community and in local civic organizations. While she was very involved in the Macon Pilot Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution, one of her primary sidelines was genealogical research through the old county records. She received national recognition from the National DAR for her preservation work. Her involvement with the Noxubee County Historical Society led to her publishing their newsletter, the Bulletin. As busy as she was with her various jobs and organizations, she was always proudest of her having taught several local individuals to read using the Laubach method.
Mrs. Reeves’ activities did not stop in the civic arena. She was a very active member of Elon Baptist church, where she was a Sunday- School teacher as well as the church pianist. After the death of her first husband in 1972, Mrs. Reeves married Pete Reeves in 1974 and, together in retirement, they spent many happy hours traveling, fishing, and socializing friends with their friends at their camp house near the river outside of Macon. She also now had time to exploit her talents as a gardener, floral designer and painter. What she enjoyed most of all, though, was the time she was now able to spend with her “grands”.

Mrs. Reeves is survived by four sons: Keith Spell, Jr. (Shirley) of Macon; Jim Spell (Beth) of John Day, Oregon; Larry Reeves (Lucy) of Alpharetta, GA; and Bill Reeves (Carolyn) of Jackson, MS. Also left to mourn the loss are nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
