Louise Meriwether Schimmel, 98, passed away on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Elderly Care Center in Macon. Her funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 15 from Macon Presbyterian Church at 3:00 P.M. with Rev. Mike Howell and Rev. Ricky Glenn officiating. Interment will immediately follow in the family lot at Oddfellows Cemetery in Macon. A time of visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. at the church. The family requests no flowers, please. Any memorials may be made to the Palmer Home for Children P.O. Box 746 Columbus, MS 39701. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon (www.cockrellfuneralhome.com) has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Louise Meriwether Schimmel, the daughter of George M. And Lida Rosser Meriwether, was born in Montgomery, Al. on April 7, 1916. She grew up in Birmingham where she graduated from Phillips High School. She later studied music at Mississippi University for Women. She worked as a secretary for the Birmingham Electric Company before marrying George Schimmel. They moved to Macon from Birmingham in 1950 to the family farm. In Macon she taught private piano lessons in the community and at Central Academy for over 30 years. She was involved in the local community and was a member of the Lyric Club and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a faithful member of the Macon Presbyterian Church and served there in many areas. She was the church organist for 33 years. She was affectionately known as “Grandma” to many.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Edna Vallie Schimmel and three sisters: Martha Meriwether Perrine, Lida Meriwether, and Frances Meriwether.
She is survived by her son and his wife: Richard and Donna Schimmel; three grandaughters: Lou (Davis) Pate, Marie (Mike) Brunson, and Laura (Mac) Griffin; one grandson, Bryan (Becky) Schimmel. She is also survived by six great grandchildren, four nieces and nephews, and twelve great nieces and nephews.
