Mrs. Mary Virginia Norwood, 78, of Columbus, MS formerly of Shuqualak, MS, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at University Medical Center in Jackson, MS. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Shuqualak Baptist Church at 11:30 A.M. with Bro. Roy Hawkins and Bro. Matthew Green officiating. Interment will follow in Shuqualak Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until service time at the church. Any memorials may be made to Shuqualak Baptist Church, P.O. Box 74, Shuqualak, MS 39361. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon, MS is entrusted with arrangements.

Mary Virginia Lanier Norwood was born to the late Bob Clarence and Dolly Virginia Cannon Lanier on April 16, 1935 in Scooba, MS. She grew in Shuqualak and graduated from Shuqualak High School. She worked for Merchants and Farmers (now Bankfirst) in Macon for twenty years. Mrs. Norwood was a member of Shuqualak Baptist Church for over 30 years and later moved her membership to Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus, MS. after she and her husband moved to the New Hope community. She was a member of W.O.M. and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Norwood was preceded in death by her brother: Bobby Lawrence Lanier; and by one very special aunt: Verna Mae Cannon Kaplan.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years: Malcolm Norwood of Columbus, MS; 2 daughters, Jennifer (Rodney) Faulkner and Verna Kay (Glenn) Taylor and son, Mack (Anne) Norwood, seven grandchildren, Keith Faulkner, Blair F. (Matt) Wozniak, Norwood (Kimberly) Taylor, Mary Clare T. Jenkins, Landon Taylor, McLeod Norwood, and Peyton Norwood and 4 great grandchildren, Colin & Ava Blair Wozniak, Carson Taylor Jenkins, and Kenslee Taylor.
