Funeral services for Oscar N. Boykin, Jr. will be held Friday, December 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Cockrell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Oddfellows Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be held Thursday at the funeral home from 5-8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Palmer Home for Children, P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703. Mr. Boykin passed away at his residence on December 10, 2013 at the age of 83. Mr. Boykin was born in Noxubee County, MS on May 15, 1930 to the late Oscar N. and Mamie Smith Boykin. He graduated from Brooksville High School and served overseas with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was Honorably Discharged in 1952 as a Sergeant. In 1953, Mr. Boykin married Nona Bell Joyner and they made their home in Macon, MS. He found employment with 4 County Electric Power Association and remained with the electrical co-op for over 39 years, ultimately retiring as District Manager for the Noxubee County District. He was a member of Ruhama Baptist Church. Mr. Boykin was an avid fisherman and hunter who after retirement delighted in rabbit hunting with his Beagles. While he also enjoyed gardening, Mr. Boykin’s fondest delight was spending time with family and friends at his camp at Land O’ Lakes near Brooksville. He is preceded in death by his wife, Nona J. Boykin, four sisters, Bessie Boykin, Linda Conner, Sarah Alma Boykin and Mary Kate Boykin and 2 brothers Joe Herman Boykin and Ben Boykin. Those left to mourn his loss are his daughter Deborah Heard (Buzzy) of Brooksville, MS; 2 sons, Larry N. Boykin of Brooksville, MS and Jeffrey L. Boykin of Sturgis, MS; 4 sisters, Lurleen Wilson of Albertville, AL., Anna Belle Mitchener of Macon, MS, Ethel Coleman of Crawford, MS and Martha Fleming of Columbus, MS.; five grandchildren, Bradley Heard, Kelly Heard Ward, LaRae Boykin, Jessica Lynn Boykin and Gracelyn Carol Boykin; 4 great grandchildren, Nicholas Tyler Holliman, DeAnna Marie Holliman, John Taylor Ward and Miles Henry Ward.
