George Stovall Hines, Jr., 90, passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 at Specialty Hospital in Meridian, MS. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 11:00 A.M. from Brooksville Baptist Church with Bro. Jay Spiller officiating. Interment will follow in the Brooksville Cemetery. A time of visitation will held for family and friends from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials to please be made to the Brooksville Baptist Church Music Department % Mrs. Judy Bolin P.O. Box 52 Brooksville, MS 39739. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is entrusted with the arrangements.
Mr. Hines was born on December 24, 1922 in Cliftonville, MS to the late George Stovall and Lydia Wyatt Payne Hines. He grew up in Noxubee County and attended the Cliftonville, Brooksville, and Macon Public Schools. In 1943, during World War II, Mr. Hines was called upon to serve in his country’s military and so he joined the U.S. Army. After completing his basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana in July of 1943, he was deployed to the European Theater of Operations in service with the 358th Engineers Battalion of the 1st Armored Division, 3rd Army, which was under the leadership of General George S. Patton. During his term of service, Mr. Hines was involved in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, the Belgium Dike Defense, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhine River Crossing into the German homeland. He earned Battle Stars for each of these major campaigns. After the war’s end, Mr. Hines returned to Noxubee County and worked at various jobs during his lifetime, including operating heavy equipment, working at the Kraft Cheese Plant in Brooksville, MS, and driving a semi truck, a job from which he finally retired in July of 1990. During his lifetime he was also involved in dairy farming and beef cattle ranching. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and enjoying time with his family. Mr. Hines was a member of Brooksville Baptist Church but had been a member and Deacon of Ruhama Baptist Church in western Noxubee County.
Mr. George Stovall Hines, Jr. leaves to mourn his passing his wife: Oline Hines of Macon as well as one daughter: June Robbins(Perry) of Macon, MS and one son: James W. Hines (Yvonne) of Jackson, AL. He is also survived by one brother: Wallace Hines. Also surviving him are 4 grandchildren, James William Hines, Jr., Emily Frances Nottingham,Robbie Robbins,and Jeremy Robbins. 6 great grandchildren, Natasha Coggins, Colby Robbins, Kelsey Robbins, Ethan Robbins, Lainey Robbins and Caroline Nottingham and one great-great granddaughter, Madison Coggins. He was predeceased by one granddaughter: Sonja Robbins Watkins.
