Mr. Joseph Shelton Maury Sr. 93, passed away Wednesday June 12, 2013 at Baptist Memorial Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS. His funeral service will be held Sunday at 2:00 P.M. from the Episcopal Church of the Nativity in Macon with Rev. Gene Asbury officiating. Interment will follow on the family lot at Oddfellows Cemetery in Macon. A time of visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Any memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Nativity 301 N. Washington St Macon, MS 39341. Cockrell Funeral Home Inc. of Macon, MS is entrusted with the arrangements. Mr. Joe, as he was fondly known, was a native and lifetime resident of Macon, MS. He was born on February 4, 1920 to the late Joseph Shelton and Elizabeth Wright Maury. He was a graduate of Macon High School and then entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant. After he returned from the war, he attended and graduated from East Mississippi Junior College with a degree in agriculture. He reopened a Texaco Chevron service station in Macon and later opened a Gulf Station. He married Selma Virginia Maury in December 15,f 1945. In 1949, they moved to their current residence where they both lived until their deaths. Mr. Joe was a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier in Macon for 28 years. After his retirement from the USPS, he opened a landscaping business, which he really enjoyed, and worked at that for many years. Mr. Joe was a lay minister of the Episcopal Church of the Nativity.

He is survived by his son: Joseph Shelton Maury, III of Macon; a Daughter-in-Law: Patricia L. Maury of Jackson, MS . He is also survived by two grandchildren: Joseph Shelton Sellers Maury of Brandon and Rachel K. Maury of Starkville, MS as well as one great-grandchild: Isabella Grace Maury of Brandon, MS. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife; one son: Thomas Edward Maury; 3 brothers and 1 sister.
