Mr. Houston Laverne Ledbetter, 88, passed away Monday, January 2, 2012 at Windsor Place at Plantation Pointe in Columbus following a brief stay. His funeral service will be Thursday, Jan. 5 at 11:00 A.M. at Calvary Baptist Church in Macon with interment following the service at Oddfellows Cemetery. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 4 until 7 P.M. Wednesday evening at Cockrell Funeral Home in Macon. Any memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church 105 Dent Street Macon, MS 39931.
Mr. Ledbetter, known as “Slim” to his many friends and co-workers, was born in Reform, Alabama on June 19, 1923 to Edgar and Stella Gray Ledbetter. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, spending one year at Iwo Jima in the south Pacific and also serving with the occupation forces in Korea immediately following the war. He was a lifetime resident of Noxubee County, MS where he was employed by the Macon Electric Light and Water Department for 43 years, retiring in June of 1987 as Department Manager and also as City Fire Chief. He was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Macon, where he was very active in church affairs. He served as a Deacon and as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. His guidance and leadership at the church will be sorely missed.
Mr. Ledbetter is survived by his daughter: Gloria Tidwell of Petal, MS and his two sons: Calvin L. Ledbetter of Pensacola, Fla. and Jerry G. Ledbetter of Aberdeen, MS. He is also survived by his brother: Calvin Owen Ledbetter of Edgar, Wisconsin; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse: Kate Fair Ledbetter; his sister: Helen Kinard; and several step brothers and sisters.
