Mary Alice Pressly Crockett

Mrs. Mary Alice Pressly Crockett, 96, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at Starkville Manor in Starkville MS.
Graveside services will be held Monday, December 12, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Brooksville Cemetery in Brooksville MS. with Rev. Jearl Hunley officiating. There will not be any visitation. Memorials may be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Children’s Home, p.o. drawer G, Denton, TX 76202 or your favorite charity. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crockett was born July 3, 1915 in Steens, MS to the late John Samuel and Mary Margaret Smith Pressly. Her father passed away when she was 3 months old and she and her mother returned to Brooksville, MS to live with her grandparents, Mattie Frances and Joseph Patrick Smith. Mary Alice graduated in the Class of 1934 from Brooksville High School. She and her mother moved to Houston, TX the day after her graduation. She won a scholarship, the M.E. Foster scholarship in piano in 1935, also a scholarship in voice. She studied there for 2 years, after which time, she decided to take a secretarial course at Houston Business College, Houston, TX from which she graduated in 1936. She also attended the University of Houston for a year.
She was employed by the Texas and New Orleans Railroad, Southern Pacific lines, for 15 years. When her husband retired from the Houston Police Dept., they moved to then Riverview, AL., now Valley, AL. in 1965. She was employed for a couple of years, then was employed by Auburn University from 1967 until 1971 as head secretary of Environmental Health Division, where she worked in that capacity for 4 years. She and her husband decided to sell their home and move to Brooksville, MS., where most of her relatives lived. While living in Brooksville she was employed by Golden Triangle Regional Medical Center as a discharge analysis clerk in the medical records department for four years before retiring. After 13 years they decided to move to Frostproof, FL where they lived for 1o years. Mary Alice served as organist of Sun Ray United Methodist Church of which she and her husband were affiliate members. She was a member of the Brooksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Christian Business and Professional Women of America. After the death of her husband, Roy Crockett, she moved to Columbus, MS where she lived for four years. She then moved to Graber’s Nursing Home in Crawford for eight years after which she moved to Starkville Manor.

Survivors include two cousins Myra Marler of Starkville, MS and Margaret Gray of Brooksville, MS.
