Mrs. Ida Unruh Schmidt, 96, passed from this life Friday evening, November 25, 2011 at Noxubee General Hospital. Mrs. Schmidt was a Montezuma, Kansas native, born to the late Andrew B. and Susie Jantz Unruh on April 21, 1915. She was married for seventy-four years to the late Ivan Schmidt, who preceded her in death in 2009. She was the last one of her family surviving after her parents immigrated to America from Russia. They lived through many hard years as well as the tough years of the Depression.
She and her husband lived in Winton, California and for many years in Fredonia, Kansas. They were members of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite and were very active in church life and outreach. One of Mrs. Schmidt’s primary concerns in life was for her family’s salvation and Christian walk in life, for which she was often in prayer. In later life Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt moved to Clarksdale, MS to be nearer to their children, and in 2003 moved to the Oakwood Manor nursing home in Brooksville, MS. She was a humorous and witty person who made friends easily. She had an amazing memory of songs and Bible stories, as well as of people she had met throughout her life and retained her clear mind until the end. She enjoyed being with her family and friends.
A local visitation for family and friends in the Noxubee County area will be held at Oakwood Manor in Brooksville on Sunday, Nov. 27 from 2:00 until 4:00 P.M. Mrs. Schmidt’s funeral service will be held in Clarksdale on Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from Clarksdale Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. Interment will follow in the Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Oakwood Manor P.O. Box 325 Brooksville, MS 39739. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon, MS and National Funeral Home of Clarksdale, Ms are handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Schmidt is survived by her eight sons: Donald and wife Geneva, Apple Creek, Ohio; Roland and wife Twila, Macon, MS; Eldon, Raymond and wife Gwendene, Richard and wife Jane, Edwin and wife Letha, Dale and wife Maxine, all of Clarksdale, MS. and Roger and wife Clara of Batesville, MS. She is also survived by twenty-eight grandchildren, sixty- nine great –grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death her parents, four brothers, four sisters, her loving husband, one daughter, two daughters-in-law, and two infant great-grandsons.
