James L. Harris, Jr. (Jimmy), 88, passed away Friday October 14, 2011 at Montfort Jones Memorial Hospital in Kosciusko, MS. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2 p.m. graveside at Oddfellows Cemetery with Steve Reynolds officiating. Visitation will be held at Cockrell Funeral Home Sunday from 1:15 until 1:45 p.m. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 510, Macon, MS 39341.Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is in charge of services.
Mr. Harris was born on July 26,1923 in Macon, MS. to the late James Lovic and Lucy Hale Harris. He was a graduate of Macon High School and was also a 1947 graduate of Mississippi State University. At MSU, he was a member of the football team in 1941 and 1942. He was a member of Phi Eta Sigma Fraternity; Chi Lambda Rho Honorary Fraternity; and Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II having served as Lieutenant (jg) in the U.S. Navy. He married the former Geraldine Holland from Douglasville, GA. in 1946. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Harris officiated high school football games for fourteen years. He was active member of Zack Brooks Golf Club, Pineview Country Club, American Legion, AARP, NRFE, NAPUS. In 1978, he retired as postmaster of Macon Post Office after 32 years of postal service.
His survivors include his wife Geraldine (Gerry) Harris of Macon, MS; a daughter, Jane Harris of Petal, MS; a son Richard Harris of Lauderdale, MS; a sister, Kay Joffrion of Charlotte, N.C. and 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Edward Hale
