John R. "Sonny" Wood

John R. Wood of Macon, MS passed away at Noxubee General Hospital in Macon, MS on August 11, 2011 at the age of 71 years. Mr. Wood, known as “Sonny” to friends and family, was a retired U.S. Navy Captain who was born in Indianola, MS on November 15, 1939 to the late Walker and Ida Christine Johnson Wood. He grew up in Greenwood, MS where he graduated from Greenwood High School. He then graduated from Ole Miss with degrees in Anthropology and Sociology. He was commissioned into the U.S. Navy where he served on active duty for eleven years. He then completed eighteen years in the U.S. Navy Reserve and retired as a Captain. He truly enjoyed both freshwater and saltwater fishing, especially tarpon fishing in the Florida Keys. He also enjoyed reading and had spent most of his time the past few years restoring antiques. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Wood is survived by his wife: Paula S. George of Macon, MS; one son: John Richard Wood, Jr. of Dallas, TX; two sisters: Barbara Ann Radant of Memphis, TN and Betty Bell of Macon, MS and one brother: Claude Wood of Jackson, MS.
A Memorial Service for Mr. Wood will be held at a later date. Cockrell Funeral Home of Macon is entrusted with arrangements.
